Michelle Williams “Unexpected” Album Gets Pushed Back

July 28, 2008

Michelle Williams previously scheduled Unexpected album release of August 12 has now been pushed back. The Destiny’s Child singer addressed the decision on her Myspace Page Blog (an excerpt below).

Michelle also mentioned that “Hello Heartbreak” is being serviced to dance radio while “The Greatest” will be the official second single.

For her sanity, I hope she doesn’t undergo the Kelly Rowland treatment and find her album pushed back for an entire year.

I am so sorry about the news of my album!!! Trust me……when they told me I was numb for two days and couldn’t talk to anybody!!! I had sooooooooooooo many questions of as to why they’d push my album back three weeks before the original release date!!!! I will be honest and say that I am disappointed becuz I feel like we should’ve been doing more 3 months ago to promote my album instead of waiting to the last minute to change the date!!!! I have thought about EVERYTHING!!! Columbia Records is saying that they need more time to properly set up the album to ensure its success!!! So let’s make some lemonade out of the lemons!!! This could very well be a blessing in disguise!!! Plus there are still many people who didn’t even know my album was coming out August 12th anyway. I know you guys are LIVID but let’s keep the energy POSITIVE!!!! Things will work out for the good!!!! I will still WIN!!!!!

I HAVE AND WILL CONTINUE to do my part in making the album a success!!! I have a great album and am confident that it can stand with the rest of the great music that is coming out this year!!!!

Toni Morrison Memorial in S.C., African-American Female Named Head of Athletic Commission & Double Dutch Made Official Varsity Sport…

July 28, 2008

This past weekend Toni Morrison and 300 people had a memorial ceremony in Sullivan’s Island, South Carolina commemorating those who suffered through slavery (and arrived at the port). The event, with African drumming and libations, also featured the dedication of Morrison’s “bench by the road.” Entire story here.

Melvina Lathan is knocking ‘em out left and right. Last year she was named first African-American female commissioner and most recently New York governor David Patterson has named the boxing judge head of the New York State Athletic Commission. Congratulations Melvina… More of the story here.

And in New York City, Double Dutch has officially been named a high school varsity sport. The season will begin in spring with the hopes of 10-15 competitive teams across the city.

Dwyane Wade Ballin’ Baldy

July 27, 2008

The sexual chocolate-ness that is Dwyane Wade is now hairless. The NBA Olympian shaved his head, reportedly for his jaunt in Beijing for the biggest sports event of the year. I guess that’s what you call manly inspiration.

The cut is getting mixed reviews… I’m still pondering it myself. Ladies… what do you think?

Victoria’s Secret Pink University Line to Include HBCU’s

July 27, 2008

The university line of Victoria’s Secret Pink is adding Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU) to its fashion sense. Initially the line, featuring just over 30 colleges and universities did not include one HBCU… That is until Amelia Reid, a sophomore at Howard University, put the fire under their pink covered bottoms.

The student emailed Victoria’s Secret corporate office and even started a Facebook group called “HBCU Ladies Wear Victoria’s Secret Too” according to Black Enterprise magazine. Soon after the Facebook group gained momentum, a representative from Victoria’s Secret reached out to Amelia Reid and let her know that the company had planned to roll out HBCU Victoria’s Secret Pink wear during the fall season and the omission was due to business plans (acquiring branding). Still… Way to go Amelia! Lord knows Brown girls love the pink V.S.

Starting in the fall, five HBCU’s will be featured in the Victoria’s Secret Pink collegiate collection including Howard University, Florida A&M, North Carolina A&T, Hampton University, and Southern University.

Record Breaking Black Edition of Vogue Italia

July 27, 2008

The all Black model edition of Vogue Italia has gone into reprint! A first for Conde Nast (Vogue’s publishing parent), who has experienced high demand for the collector’s issue. 10,000 more copies of the issue, which features the likes of Tyra Banks, Naomi Campbell, and Toccarra have been reprinted.

This issue was done in an attempt to combat the stereotype that Black models don’t sell products via advertisements. Obviously, that sentiment was a huge faux pas on the behalf of anyone who has ever thought such ‘cuz the Brown girls sure are selling this ‘zine.

The July issue of Vogue Italia is still, nonetheless, hard to get your fingers on.
