Why We Do This…

On the treadmill last night and I’m watching one of the splashy magazine style news shows and I see that Rogan Gregory (no, this name does not immediately draw any recollection, sorry) had the pre-launch for his bi-coastal “eco-friendly collection” for Target Go International at Barney’s the other day. While the clothes don’t particularly move me on the fashion front (I typically utilize Target solely for household items, although I have very stylish friends who often find hidden gems in the superstore), I do appreciate that they’re eco-friendly.

So as I’m pumping away up hill at 7.0, I see that a bunch of celebrities turned out for the Barney’s event that preceded the actual launch. Rachel Bilson, Marcia Cross, Nicky Hilton all came out for the LA shindig, while Amanda Peet and Jessica Szohr hit the New York version last week. Cool, sounds like it was quite the star studded event. But then I get home, exhausted and hungry of course, but I have to check my email and someone sent me pictures of a few Martini Pink Princesses who ALSO found time to smooze at the event. Sanaa Lathan, Gabrielle Union, Joy Bryant, and Zoe Saldana were ALL in attendance. And for a moment I was appalled because had I not received the pictures, I might not have known that any of Black Hollywood’s creme crop showed up.

I was truly taken aback simply because it was as if these certified Black actresses had been erased from the documenting of this event. Which ever flashy, fast-paced packaged news show I was watching, had zipped through, with image and voiceover, many of the attendees, never once mentioning any of those Black actresses. And for a moment my heart hurt. Because they work hard. But in the next instance it reinforced why we do what we do here at Martini Pink. It’s about celebration. Yes, we’ll be honest when you’re hair cut isn’t right or you might have to fire your stylist (what real girlfriend wouldn’t?), but for the most part, we’re about celebrating women in all of our beautifully diverse elements. And that’s the true target we aim for.

These women have a reason to keep their head up. We can’t get enough of the beauty that comes from Hollywood. When these girls hearts are broken, where do they find someone who could truly mend it? I want to be the first to be there.

Got something to say?
