Reel Sisters Uptown Film Fest

Abiola Abrams, the host of BET “The Best Shorts” will co-host the first “Reel Sisters Uptown” day long film festival at the Harlem School of the Arts on Sunday, September 14, 2008 for just $5.00! The event will feature a full day of films including a special screening and presentation of Abrams’ own film Knives in My Throat: The Year I Survived While My Mind Tried to Kill Me, an inspirational work about the life of Taqiyya Haden, a talented young poet and hip-hop artist. Other film selections to be presented include the following:
Safiya 9:58 Min., Narrative Director/Producer/Writer: Sylvia Terry A young woman teaches an interested young man that he will have to court her in a traditional manner.
Hip Hop Revolution 48:00 Min., Documentary Director/Producer/Writer: Weaam Williams Using an experimental narrative style, South African filmmaker Weaam Williams has infused her film with a texture and life that breathes with every cut. “Hip Hop Revolution” is an exploration of the lives of a generation so touched by this genre and its culture that they are inspired to question, survive and conquer an unjust political system. Through the struggles of DJs, B-Boys, MCs and creative graffiti artists, “Hip Hop Revolution” depicts an element of hip hop so often forgotten - its power to inspire and catalyze change.
Brothers & Sisters in the Struggle, Songs and Ciphers 28:00 Min., Documentary Director: Christine Peng, Eddy Rivera, Karina Hurtado, Diana Coryat Producer/Writer: Christine Peng, Eddy Rivera, Karina Hurtado, Diana Coryat Since 1998 Venezuela’s Bolivarian Revolution has evoked mass media controversy on a national and international level. This popular movement has also forged intercontinental alliances and sparked the imagination of many communities around the globe. Filmed through the lens of young people of color, this film follows five New Yorkers as they attempt to learn how the Bolivarian Revolution has impacted people’s lives.
Warrior Boyz 42:30 Min., Documentary Producer/Director/Writer: Baljit Sangra Warrior Boyz looks at some of the challenges that South Asian youth are facing today and sets out to understand why they are vulnerable to the allure of gang culture. In the past decade over a hundred Indo- Canadian youth have been killed as a result of gang violence. Most of the victims came from middle class families within a tight knit community.
Jewelry Box 28:00 Min., Narrative Director: Janice R. Thomas, Joshua Roybal Producer/Writer: Raynna Celeste Thomas, Lucille James, Janice R. Thomas “Jewelry Box” is a short drama depicting a teenager’s inability to cope with a mentally ill father, and her gradual descent into the same realm of mental illness as her father.

The Show: “From Harlem to Hollywood” with Sean “Diddy” Combs

On May 2, 2008, Sean “Diddy” Combs received one of the greatest entertainment honors ever. He became the first male rapper to be rewarded with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. 745 Films, in conjunction with BET, will premiere “From Harlem to Hollywood,” a 30- minute documentary styled program detailing the day Diddy received his accolade, his rise to the upper echelon of Hollywood and his celebrity buddies who stuck by him along the way will all be featured on this show.
From Diddy’s early arrival at KIIS FM for the Ryan Seacrest radio show to the actual moment he unveiled his golden star, to the celebratory brunch at Mel’s Diner on Sunset Blvd, viewers will get to witness what this momentous day was like through the words and actions of the don Diddy.
Martini Pink was on the scene for Diddy’s special day and hit you with this recap but to see it live and in color, you’re going to have to tune in to BET. Directed by Jon Marc Sandifer, “From Harlem to Hollywood” airs on BET tonight, July 3rd at 8:30pm EST.
